The transplant of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is a complex procedure used mainly, but not solely, to cure forms of leukaemia and lymphoma. In addition to bone marrow, stem cells can be taken from peripheral blood after a specific treatment for their mobilization or from umbilical cord blood.

Transplant of HSCs is indicated in cases of acute and chronic leukaemia, marrow failure, thalassemia, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, other chronic myeloproliferative disorders and some types of solid tumors (especially breast tumors), a number of genetic disorders and, according to recent indications, even some autoimmune diseases.
